Art UK Sculpture Volunteer Project

Miners' Memorial, Coalville.
The Art UK Sculpture project is creating a comprehensive record of the UK's publicly owned sculptures. The project aims to transform the way people access and learn about their sculpture heritage, and to allow existing, new and diverse audiences to share knowledge, exchange opinions and visit objects, both in person and online. You can find out more about the project at
I became interested and involved in the project, as a volunteer photographer, in 2018, after learning about it via The Royal Photographic Society, of which I am a member. I attended an initial workshop in Birmingham of that year and was subsequently allocated three regions to concentrate on; North West Leicestershire, Charnwood, and, Hinckley & Bosworth. With no list of items to work with, I began research at the end of 2018 and started photographing at the start of 2019.The project will run until the end of 2020. To date I have photographed 73 sculptures and produced 657 images. I give one example below of the 'Miners' Memorial' in Coalville. I have removed the context of the piece to emphasise the decline and absence of the industry today.
